Using the N/A Value in a Numeric question in a Grid

I would like respondents to enter a value from 1-5 or enter the letter N for not applicable.  Can I use the N/A value field in numeric question set up to accomplish that?

Sorry, numeric boxes have built-in logic to only allow numeric answers.  You'd have to use a free-format question and make it a text box, then write some custom JavaScript verification to allow 1-5 or N as the only valid replies.

Do you happen to know what the functionality of the N/A value field is in a numeric question?  It goes right next to the Min and Max inputs for the numeric field.

It's common in marketing research to provide a single value, such as 99 or 999 to allow the respondent one specific value to signify the Don't Know or Not Applicable type answer without complicating the programming of the question (separate checkbox that clears out anything typed in, validating alphanumeric characters, etc.)
