How do I use this code?

I've just searched the forum and come up with this solution.  I just want to use the code and then add my own hex values.  I've pasted that code into the footer to no avail.  It comes up as comments.  Any suggestions?

Did you include the style tags?
Did exactly what it said on the tin.

Pasting the script exactly as it's pasted makes the second row (after <style>) go green

When you say that it comes up as comments, you mean that you are seeing the code printed to the page where respondents can see it, right?

If so, you can try right-clicking on the text in your browser and clicking "Inspect" / "Inspect Element" to be taken to the part of the HTML that isn't working how we want it to.  If you can share the HTML surrounding the "<style> ... </style>", it might provide us with some hints about what's going wrong.

May be:
<style type="text/css">
     table.inner_table > tbody> tr >td:nth-child(1)
    {
        background-color: red;
    }
        table.inner_table > tbody> tr >td:nth-child(2)
    {
        background-color: yellow;
    }
        table.inner_table > tbody> tr >td:nth-child(3)
    {
        background-color: green;
    }
</style>
